Pseudo Accounts in Outlook 2003 Print

  • 1

If you’d like to retain your current email address and use it in conjunction with a hosted email address, Microsoft Outlook can be configured with a “pseudo account”.

  1. Open Outlook Express.
  2. Click on Tools, then Accounts.
  3. Select the Mail tab.
  4. Select your current default account. (It will have "default" beside it.)
  5. Click on Properties, then Servers.
  6. Write down the values in the Incoming Mail, Outgoing Mail and Account Name fields.
  7. Click on Cancel.
  8. Click on Add, and choose Mail.
  9. Type in your name.
  10. Type in the pseudo email address you wish to use, click Next.
  11. Fill in the Incoming Mail and Outgoing Mail servers you wrote down earlier, click Next.
  12. Type in the Account Name you wrote down earlier.
  13. Type in the Password associated with the Account Name above, click Next, then Finish.

Now the new account will be visible in the Internet Account panel, named according to the mail server you entered in Step 11. You should change that now so you’ll be able to recognise it for what it is and not confuse it with other accounts. I would suggest using the email address you just set up as the name. To change the name:

  1. Select the account you just set up and click Properties.
  2. Type in the distinctive name in the first field.
  3. Uncheck the box next to ”Include this account when receiving mail or sychronizing”.
  4. Click OK, then Close.

To use your new account, start a new mail message. The From: field should be a dropdown box, and you should be able to choose your new email address from there. Type in a wee message and hit Send. When you receive it in a few minutes, look at the From: field, and to confirm it’s working right-click on the name and select Properties - the new email address should be listed.

In future when you’re sending messages or replying to messages, you can just choose the appropriate email address. You can set up as many accounts as you want in this way.
